Belfast Learning City will host the 6th annual Belfast Festival of Learning during the week 20 - 26 March 2023 to promote Belfast as a learning city for all and to celebrate Belfast receiving the UNESCO Learning City Award in 2021.

The festival aims to engage Belfast citizens in learning and to inspire interest and enjoyment through a week-long programme of interactive learning events and workshops.

It also aims to showcase the great range of learning opportunities that exist in the city. We particularly wish to promote events that encourage the participation of groups and individuals who have experienced barriers in accessing learning opportunities.

The programme will reflect the many reasons people learn, depending on their needs and life stage, whether that be learning for work, learning through education, learning to live together and learning for life.

Please think of the festival as an opportunity to showcase the work your organisation does in terms of providing learning. Many of you will have existing events happening during festival week, or perhaps celebration events as courses come to a close - why not let the festival raise wider awareness and appreciation of these?

If you would like to hold an event as part of the festival, guidance notes and the event submission form are attached. A small amount of financial assistance is available to support these events. If you have an event that you would like included in the festival programme which requires no funding, just complete an event submission form giving us the event details.

Event Submission Forms for Belfast Festival of Learning events must be returned no later than 5.00pm on Friday 4 November 2022.

A month-long festival of events and activities for older people, Positive Ageing Month celebrates the contribution that older people make to their communities and the city of Belfast, and no more so than this year!

Our festival  begins on Thursday 1 October at 10.30am in City Hall with the Virtual Age-friendly Belfast Convention, organised by the Age-friendly Belfast team. Delivered via webinar: https://vimeo.com/event/319441

Now in its fifth year, the festival looks very different this year but still has activities to suit all tastes. There will still be some Positive Ageing Month favourites like the Slipped Disco, the big quiz and Tea Dance but they will all be virtual and at home. You can also join us for cookery demonstrations, shared reading, history talks, info sessions, a games afternoon and the ever popular Chocolate Bingo.

There are still a few live events – Silver Sunday 4th October at the Ulster Museum, movies at the stand cinema and a few walks.

Booking for most events is essential this year so please check programme details

Welcome to the fifth annual Belfast Festival of Learning running March 23-29.

The Belfast Festival of Learning is a key feature in the city’s plan to build Belfast as a learning city for all, in line with the commitments made to UNESCO, (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation), when Belfast became a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in 2018.

The festival helps to deliver on the key commitments we made to celebrate and promote learning, to make it accessible to everyone, by removing barriers to learning and to make it attractive and relevant for all ages and life stages – across all parts of the city.  The festival is a great example of how all this can be achieved.  Have a look at the programme and you will be amazed by the range of free, fun and thought-provoking events on offer across the city during the festival week.

The festival programme reflects the great variety of reasons why people choose to learn – for quality of life, for education, employment and to build positive relationships; it is this wide spectrum of learning that can help build Belfast as a city that is resilient, healthy, age friendly, family friendly, diverse and harmonious, sustainable and a city that works for everyone!

The focus this year is on how learning can be used to build resilience for individuals, communities and for the city.  The challenges of modern day life can take a toll on our quality of life and we need to have opportunities to build resilience and find the tools to enjoy life.

Together we can build a learning city for all, we need to work with partners across the city and beyond.  Belfast is also part of the Irish Network of Learning Cities and as such we have the opportunity to share and learn from the experiences of Cork and Limerick, who have been awarded the UNESCO Learning Cities award, Dublin and Derry & Strabane learning cities who have also joined the Global Network of Learning Cities.  We are currently building alliances with our neighbouring learning cities in Scotland, England and Wales.

Why not be part of Belfast Learning City? Try something new during the weeklong festival running March 23-29, you never know what joy it may inspire in you and where it may take you in life.

    LLL Festival branding 021215. jpeg

Following the launch in 2015 of Belfast Strategic Partnership’s “Belfast a Learning
City” and the Learning Charter for Belfast, BSP is now calling for organisations in the city to contribute to Belfast’s first Festival of Learning in 2016. This unique festival aims to engage Belfast citizens in learning, and inspire interest and enjoyment, through a week long programme of interactive learning events and workshops.

During the week of 7th- 13th March 2016 we are asking organisations to showcase a diverse range of learning opportunities in our city for people of all ages, all backgrounds and all locations. These may be already planned or you could plan one specifically for the Festival. We particularly hope to showcase events that encourage the participation of groups and individuals who have experienced barriers in accessing learning opportunities.

Submit an idea for an event!
We want to enable as wide a range of organisations as possible to contribute to shaping the programme, and meeting the different needs of learners in the city, by directly creating and delivering events. We will look at every idea submitted with a view to endorsing it under the Festival of Learning, and we will co-ordinate and promote a citywide programme of events for the Festival.

All you have to do is complete the attached Event Submission Form and send us
your ideas as soon as possible – but the final deadline will be 15th January 2016.

A sustainable journey could include replacing your usual car journey by walking, cycling, taking public transport or car sharing. This challenge is open to all workplaces in Belfast and will be an opportunity for healthy competition between workplaces, and also between teams within workplaces.

To register for the challenge simply visit www.abc.getmeactive.org.uk enter your details, with your work location, and then complete the short survey. The website has additional information and downloadable resources.

During May, remember to log each sustainable journey you make, or if you have a smart phone why not download the supporting app and use your phone’s GPS to track your journey for you. By logging active and sustainable journeys, participants will also be entered into a series of weekly prize draws, with a range of prizes on offer.

This competition is part of the Public Health Agency funded Active Workplaces Programme and contributes to the Belfast Active Travel Action Plan.
